CHAPTER III: REPORTS ON INDIVIDUAL CASES

During the period covered in this Annual Report, the Commission held its 91st session, 92nd special session, 93rd special session and 94th session at which a number of petitions were received concerning alleged violations of human rights recognized in the American Declaration of the Rights and Duties of Man and the American Convention on Human Rights. The Commission opened 178 individual cases between January 20, 1996 and January 20, 1997. This brings the total number of individual cases being processed at the present time to 816.

The Commission herewith presents its reports on individual cases, the publication of which has been approved, to the General Assembly of the Organization for the period covered by this report.

Accordingly, the reports transcribed below, which concern both the admissibility of the cases and the rulings on the merits of the case, appear in the year in which they were approved by the Commission, following the alphabetic order of the country to which they refer.
