N° 32/09

IACHR AND INSTITUTE WILL ACCEPT ELECTRONIC SUBMISSIONS FOR POSTER CONTEST

Washington, D.C., May 20, 2009 — The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) and the Inter-American Institute of Human Rights (Institute) will receive posters electronically for the contest launched in April. The competition rules, which originally established as a requisite that the prints had to be sent by mail, have been modified. The IACHR and the Institute consider that making it possible to send it electronically will allow the participation of a greater number of interested persons. The posters should be sent to the following e-mail: mrivero@oas.org

Another modification has also been approved, related to the requisite of size for the children’s category. The new rules allow that each participant in this category to decide freely the size of his or her poster.

This poster design competition was launched to mark this year’s 50th anniversary of the creation of the IACHR.

With the slogan “IACHR Defending Human Rights,” the contest will have two categories: one for the participation of children and teens ages 12 to 17 and the other for young adults ages 18 to 23. The deadline for presenting entries is August 31, 2009. The first prize consists of (US) $500 and a diploma of recognition. Entries chosen as finalists will be published on the IACHR Web page and included in an exhibition.

The poster competition is one of a series of activities being planned to celebrate 50 years since the decision creating the IACHR was adopted, on August 18, 1959, at the Fifth Meeting of Consultation of Ministers of Foreign Affairs in Santiago, Chile.

A principal, autonomous body of the Organization of American States (OAS), the IACHR derives its mandate from the OAS Charter and the American Convention on Human Rights. The Inter-American Commission has the mandate to promote respect for human rights in the region and acts as a consultative body to the OAS in this matter. The Commission is composed of seven independent members who act in a personal capacity, without representing a particular country, and who are elected by the OAS General Assembly.

The Inter-American Institute of Human Rights (IIHR) was created in 1980, under an agreement between the Inter-American Court of Human Rights and the Republic of Costa Rica, as an independent international academic institution for the promotion of human rights and democracy in the Americas. The IIHR collaborates with the Inter-American Court of Human Rights and the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, and works with all sectors of civil society and the State in the countries of the region, as well as with international organizations, especially those within the Organization of American States. The IICHR is headquartered in San José, Costa Rica, and its regional office for South America is located at the OAS offices in the Palacio del MERCOSUR in Montevideo, Uruguay.
